Norris takes pole in the Interlagos rain

Lando Norris has secured top spot in qualifying for the Brazilian GP. Behind the McLaren driver came the two Mercedes cars of George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Charles Leclerc, Liam Lawson and Nico Hülkenberg completed positions four to six.

According to formula1.com, the session at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace was shaped by heavy rain, two red flags and a lengthy stoppage right at the start of Q1. formula1.com also reports that it is Norris' third consecutive pole at Interlagos. Russell was left frustrated afterwards by a misjudgement from his team: Mercedes had aborted his second lap in Q3, believing there was still some time left before the next shower.

Grid penalties reshape the starting grid

The starting grid looks markedly different from the qualifying result. According to formula1.com, Russell drops five places and Leclerc ten. That puts Antonelli alongside Norris on the front row.

Ferrari are hit particularly hard: according to formula1.com and motorsport.com, the team has changed the internal combustion engine on both cars. After problems in the third free practice session, further power unit components were replaced on Lewis Hamilton's car, so he starts from the very back. Hamilton said he had mainly used qualifying as a test for the new engine.

Max Verstappen must also start from the back of the field after power unit component changes, according to the-race.com. Sergio Pérez likewise starts from the rear, reports formula1.com. According to the-race.com, the starting grid is still provisional.

Rafael Câmara on his debut

Brazilian Rafael Câmara is contesting his first Formula 1 race for Haas F1 Team in Brazil. According to formula1.com, he replaces Frenchman Esteban Ocon, who has unexpectedly left the team. Haas had already signed the 21-year-old for next season.

His first qualifying was a mixed affair: in Q1 he spun and hit the barrier, and in Q2 he ended up in the barriers, triggering a red flag. Because several drivers ahead of him take grid penalties, he moves up to 11th on the grid, according to formula1.com.

Warning for Bearman, race start in the evening

Oliver Bearman has received a warning from the stewards for reversing in the pit lane. The Haas driver qualified eighth and, according to formula1.com, moves further up the starting grid thanks to the penalties.

The race starts today at 18:00 German time. In the drivers' championship, Antonelli leads with 380 points ahead of Verstappen on 261 and Hamilton on 259. In the constructors' standings, Mercedes are on 630 points ahead of Ferrari on 504. You can find the full picture in the standings and all session times in the calendar.
