Methodology
Where the data comes from
- Results, starting grids, championship standings since 1950: Jolpica F1, the continuation of the Ergast database. After every race we take over the official result.
- Schedule, lap times, pit stops, tyres, weather, race control and positions from 2023: OpenF1. Our 3D replays and race charts are built from this data. They are reconstructions from measured data, not a broadcast.
- Master data (dates of birth, nationalities, founding years): Wikidata, public domain (CC0). Wikidata only supplements; if it contradicts a higher-ranking source, this is reported (check rule R16).
- Images: Wikimedia Commons, only with a permitted licence. Author and licence of every image are listed under Image credits.
- Broadcasters and coverage: our own research with the broadcasters themselves. Every entry has a source and a check date; if it is too old, it is checked again (R12).
We use the data under the terms of each source. We do not offer data downloads or an API.
How often we update
A scheduler checks every five minutes what is due. On race weekends data is fetched during and after every session. The provisional result appears shortly after the end and is replaced by the official one as soon as it is available. If an official result changes later (for example because of a penalty), this is listed under Corrections. Once a day we check the entire database.
How we check
Every change runs through check rules. A violation sends a report to the operator; in case of serious errors nothing is published. The most important rules:
- Results: positions complete and unique (R01), points matching the points system (R02), championship points equal to the sum of the results (R06), provisional top 10 against the official result (R05), past race without a result (R23).
- Assignments: unknown countries, drivers without a season, missing link to the source (R03, R04, R13, R21).
- Circuits and times: time zone and layout of each race (R07), overlapping layouts (R09b), changed start times (R08).
- Sources: unreachable or changed structure (R14, R15), vanished entries (R09), contradictions from Wikidata (R16).
- Texts and images: outdated figures in published texts (R11), image licences (R10), unknown text patterns (R18), German name of a Grand Prix (R17), retirement reason without translation (R24).
- Other: outdated broadcaster information (R12), penalty points (R19), partner links without a valid target (R20).
Time zones
All times on the English pages are UK time; the local time at the circuit is shown in small print next to it. The German pages show German time, the Spanish pages the time of mainland Spain. If the source does not provide a time (for many races before 2005 and for practice sessions and qualifying up to 2021), we only show the date.
Where AI is involved
An AI writes race reviews, news, biographies, team histories, circuit descriptions and the English and Spanish versions. It works from a fact pack taken from our database; external sources are linked. Every such text is labelled at the beginning (“Created with AI based on our race data”). Markus Ochmann is responsible. Automatic checks before publication:
- Every number in the text must be in the fact pack, every driver name must belong to the race.
- External links only to the sources named; no verbatim copying from sources.
- Translations: same numbers and names as the original, no German leftovers, technical terms according to the glossary.
After publication a second check compares the facts again and corrects them if necessary. Race reviews are only in the search index if they also show their own charts from our data and all numbers and names pass this check; the others remain readable but outside the index. If the operator has checked a text himself, the date is shown. Images generated by an AI are labelled as such. Tables, tiles and sentences from templates are created directly from the data without AI.
Known limits
- Start times: for many older sessions no time has been recorded. We then only show the date.
- Lap data is only available from 1996; tyres, pit stops and positions in detail only from 2023.
- Circuit lengths: the official length of the respective layout is decisive. Where it is missing, we show the length measured from GPS data with a note.
- Historic circuits: values such as full-throttle share or top speed only exist for layouts with telemetry.
- Broadcasters: broadcasting rights change. The broadcaster’s own information is decisive.
